I only discovered El Ray just recently, and their brand of Danish "hard core" surf is very appealing to me. I had a hard time finding this CD so wrote to the band's website and received a response from guitarist Lars (AKA El Twang) who was kind enough to procure me a copy and send it to me (of course I paid for it). Upon a first listen I kind of liked this, but it was puzzling, because it was quite different from earlier material, but on continued play, it's grown on me to the point where I love it. The album is dedicated to former bass player El Kid'o (Rasmus), who died in 2008 from cancer at age 27. The music is somewhat haunting at times, lots of minor chords, not as upbeat as previous material, but it's still quite effective. The cover art is interesting too, and perhaps conveys a sense of loss. "Impala Joy Ride" and "Pink Slip" are probably my favorite tracks. Also included is a cover version from the oddly-named "bob hund", which is quite good as well. The band has been around for at least 10 years and their new bass player, La Chiquilla, fills the spot quite well. Interesting release and well worth a listen.
