I had been a big Moby fan until the release of the album "18", which I found boring and disappointing. Just recently I rediscovered his music and I must say that he still is one of the most talented producers the world of electronic music has ever seen.

But production abilities aside, he has never been a great singer. "We Are All Made Of Stars" is a nice little pop song with a simple melody and pointless lyrics, and it would have been much better if he had seeked the help of a guest vocalist. In the chorus, Moby reaches the limits of his singing capabilities; his voice can only cover a limited range of sounds.

This is why the Timo Maas Dub Mix is my favorite version of this song. I think Maas rerecorded the whole vocals for this mix. It sounds like they are sung through one of these speech devices for people who have had a throat surgery, which gives them a more intense feel. Some of the lyrics sound rather spooky in this version. The line "People they fall apart" brings to mind the image of a robot coldly examining the fact that he has just ripped a human's arm off.

The beats on this mix are also very dark and dubby and sound a lot like Maas' famous "Dooms Night" remix. I don't know what to call this, it is somewhere betweend dubstep, hard trance, techno and breakbeat. After eight years, this still sounds like having been teleported straight from a dystopian science fiction future scenario.
